I’m back! Did you miss me? Apologies for the nearly three week hiatus. Since my last blog post A took the bar exam while I packed up our apartment, and then we moved across the state and got settled into our new apartment in Pittsburgh. Needless to say it’s been a busy few weeks!
Today I’m flashing back to a dinner date that we had in Philly earlier this summer. Back when A and I were dating long distance, he used to pick the restaurant when I’d come to Pittsburgh and I would pick the restaurant when he came to visit me in Philly. This was our first dinner date after A came to live with me in Philly for the summer, and he picked the restaurant. Southern comfort food definitely suits his tastes more than mine, and so I never would have chosen to eat at The Fat Ham on my own. That’s why dining out with someone else is so much fun; A introduces me to restaurants that I wouldn’t otherwise discover, and the meal we had that night was absolutely incredible!
To kickoff the evening, A ordered a beer while I opted for a Memphis Mule, a citrusy take on a traditional Moscow Mule made with grapefruit and basil infused vodka and ginger beer.
The pimento cheese was an obvious choice. A grew up loving his grandma’s pimento cheese spread, and this deliciously spicy spread did not disappoint.
We also shared the skillet cornbread, which is served with sweet molasses butter. Simply put, it was to die for.
It seemed wrong to pass on ordering mac and cheese at a Southern restaurant, so we shared a bowl of the rich, creamy baked noodles.
The crux of the meal was the “hot chicken”, perfectly spiced and breaded and served with house made buttermilk ranch and dill pickles on brioche.
And finally, we ended the evening with a jar of thick and creamy Mississippi Mud Pie.
If you find yourself in the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia, I highly recommend that you enjoy a cocktail and hearty meal at The Fat Ham.
