I’ve been on an ice cream kick since I received an ice cream maker for Christmas (you can see my latest ice cream posts here and here), and I hope you’re not sick of ice cream yet, because today I’m bringing you another winter-friendly ice cream recipe. This recipe takes everything my candy cane and hot chocolate dreams are made of and makes them SO much better! I’d like to introduce you to hot chocolate “affogato” with homemade peppermint ice cream. Traditional affogato is an Italian beverage/dessert consisting of vanilla gelato topped with a shot of espresso. This sweet, minty, chocolate take on the classic is my heaven.
Hot Chocolate Affogato with Homemade Peppermint Ice Cream
for the peppermint ice cream (makes 1 quart):
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 cup whole milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 cup peppermint candies, smashed
Note: You will need an ice cream maker for this recipe. I used (and highly recommend!) this Donvier ice cream maker
Freeze the canister of your ice cream maker overnight.
In a large bowl, whisk the eggs for about 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Whisk in the sugar a little bit at a time, then whisk for 1 minute once all the sugar is added. Add the cream, milk, and vanilla, and whisk until combined.
Assemble your ice cream maker with the pre-chilled canister. Add the ice cream mixture to the canister of the ice cream maker and churn according to your ice cream maker’s directions.
While the ice cream is freezing, place the peppermint candies in a plastic bag and bang with the back of a wooden spoon to break the candies. Add the candy pieces to the ice cream just before it’s completely frozen and continue to churn. Save some candy pieces to top each serving, if desired.
Transfer ice cream to a loaf pan, cover with foil, and freeze for two hours so the ice cream will hold a firm shape when scooped into the glass.
for the hot chocolate (makes 2 servings):
1 cup milk (any type you prefer, I used almond milk)
3 T semisweet chocolate chips
Place milk and chocolate chips in a saucepan and heat over medium-high heat, stirring periodically, until chocolate chips melt and milk is hot. Remove pan from heat.
to assemble the affogato:
Add a generous scoop of peppermint ice cream to two glasses. Pour hot chocolate over ice cream, dividing the serving among the two glasses. Sprinkle extra peppermint candy pieces over the ice cream and enjoy!
