How to Melt Chocolate

in a Double Boiler

Melt chocolate quickly and easily using a double boiler. This simple method is so much more reliable than the microwave.

What is a double boiler? A double boiler heats food using indirect heat. Steam from boiling water in the lower pan warms the food in the upper bowl. You can easily DIY a double boiler using a pan and bowl that you already own!

Double boiler (saucepan + heat-safe bowl) Rubber spatula Water Chocolate (chopped chocolate bar, chocolate chips, or chocolate wafers)

Equipment & Ingredients

Place a saucepan on the stove and add 1-2 inches of water to the pan.

Step 1

Place a dry, shallow, heat-safe mixing bowl over the saucepan.

Step 2

Add chocolate to the mixing bowl.

Step 3

Turn on the stove to medium heat.

As the water simmers and releases steam, the steam will melt the chocolate.

Step 4

Keep stirring with a rubber spatula until all of the chocolate has melted.
